Melting My Heart

Sometimes as a mother I feel like I just don't measure up. I wonder if I'm having the impact I intend to have on my boys...raising them to honor God,  seek His will for their lives, and have an intimate relationship with Him. Yesterday, I witnessed an incident between them that was so incredibly sweet that it made my heart melt. I need reminders such as this as confirmation that even though I am imperfect my children are learning the important things in life. I want to share this with you (all 3 of you who read my blog...LOL) not as a way to brag but as a way to remind myself of the things God is accomplishing in the life of my children. :)

Yesterday after supper I gave Jared some ice cream. I wouldn't give Jake any because he had not eaten enough of his supper to earn it. After giving Jared his ice cream he asked me if he could share some with Jake. I told him that he sure could. Jake hearing this said, "What's wrong Jared? You don't want it?" To which Jared replied, "No, I want it I Just want you to have some too." Well, Jared sweetly shared some but Jake ate more than Jared wanted him to and didn't stop as soon as Jared asked him too. I made Jake get up and told him that Jared sharing with him was a gift and that he should respect Jared's wishes.  Jared went on and continued to eat his ice cream.  A few minutes later Jake said, "Jared I'm sorry for doing that." Without even thinking Jared said, "I forgive you Jake...Come here." When Jake walked over Jared gave him a big bear hug. (Jared is hardly ever that quick to offer his forgiveness.) Jared then decided he was finished with his ice cream and Jake could have the rest.

Then again in Walmart today while spending his birthday money, Jared used part of his money to buy Jake a toy. These boys are all boy and act like it most of the time. I just feel blessed to have had these glimpses into the way God is working in their little hearts. May I continue to strive to be the mother God wants me to be.

Reading Fun

I wanted to share a book that Jake and I have been reading. I ordered it last year when he was in WEE School and we are just picking it up to read it. He absolutely LOVES this book. It is a wonderful book for emergent readers or readers who have been reading a while and just struggle. In the book you take turns reading fun little stories that rhyme. We are almost finished with this book and Jake has already asked me to order another one. These are the available titles...

You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Stories to Read Together
You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Fairy Tales to Read Together
You Read to Me, I'll Read to You:  Very Short Mother Goose Tales to Read Together
You Read to Me, I'll read to You: Very Short Scary Tales to Read Together

100 Days of School

Today we celebrated 100 Days of School! It is pretty amazing considering the fact that I never intended to homeschool! Homeschooling was something God impressed upon our hearts to do, so we were obedient.  We have NEVER for a moment regretted this decision. So, that being said, here is my feeble attempt to share the fun we had today!

We began the day with breakfast that reminded us of what we were celebrating today! Not exactly nutritious but it sure was fun!

As we began our day Jake read the morning message I had written for him.  The only word he needed help with was "celebrate"!

Jake has looked forward to this day for quite some time. He was smiling from ear to ear as he placed our 100th day sticker on the chart. We have been counting our days in school from the very beginning!

Next, I read the boys the Parable of the Lost Sheep from Luke 15:1-7. I read it to them from The Message Bible. It was neat to see their faces light up when they heard the story Jesus told that also used the number 100.

We also sang a song about 100 days of school. Here it is...

It's a Hundred Days of School - (Sung to the tune of It's a
Small World)

Oh we started school such a long time ago
And there's much we've learned and a lot we know.
We can read, write, and spell
We do math very well
It's a hundred days of school.

It's a hundred days of school,
It's a hundred days of school,
It's a hundred days of school,
It's one hundred days of school.

Yes, we've studied hard and we've made new friends
And there's much to do 'til the school year ends.
But for now .....Hip Hooray, we've reached our
Hundredth Day.
It's a hundred days of school.

It's a hundred days of school,
It's a hundred days of school,
It's a hundred days of school,
It's one hundred days of school

Our next task was challenging for the boys. We sat silently for 100 seconds. Jared whispered a couple of times and when we were done said, "I was quiet the whole time." Not exactly, but he tried. :)

We counted to 100 many different ways. First, we read an interactive 100th Day of School book from Starfall.com. Then Jake counted to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's.

Jake and Jared both used 100 stickers to spell out their first name. This was a little challenging for Jared. I had to help him quite a bit, but Jake did his without much help at all!

Next we read the story, Emily's First 100 Days of School. It was a great book. A little long, but it was the only one our local library had about 100 days of school. There are lots of others but I just chose to use what was available at our library!

Next we did a writing activity. I had a few sentences and Jake just had to fill in the blank. I could have had him write the entire sentence, but for the sake of time I prepared the paper ahead of time. He had a lot of fun doing this and coming up with the answers to put in the blanks. He also had fun spelling the words by himself. I

The boys also made necklaces with 100 cheerios. First they counted out 10 groups of 10. Then they put them on the necklace. As soon as we finished, Jared gobbled his up! Jake however is saving his!

We looked at  a map and found cities that were 100 miles north, south, east and west of where we live. Jake really enjoyed this. If it were a city we had visited Jake would tell me what he remembered about that city.

Last, Jake did 100 exercises. He did 10 jumping jacks, 10 Toe touches, 10 push-ups, 10 more jumping jacks, 10 hops on his right foot, 10 hops on his left foot, 10 arm circles, 10 jumps, 10 more push-ups and 10 kicks!

I love watching my children learn and celebrate new things. What a blessing to get to teach them!!!!
